The project by the Department of Archaeologies at the University of Innsbruck, the District of Garmisch-Partenkirchen/Museum Werdenfels, and Zugspitz Region GmbH focuses on the historical roots of the Raetian culture and its significance for the cultural identity of the Alpine region.
Around 2,500 years ago, the Raetians can be identified as a distinct cultural group through characteristic archaeological finds and features, including pottery, costume accessories, ritual fire-offering sites, and the construction methods used for their houses.
Long before today’s national borders came into existence, the people of this region were closely connected. The project aims to make this shared cultural heritage visible to both local residents and tourists, and to strengthen awareness of the cross-border identity and the historical connections between the people of Tyrol and Bavaria.
